i'd argue that pheonix is not infact the best, it takes too long to cast and has quite a large energy input. I'd recommend flare (always), fire storm, fireball, conjure flame (for when energy runs low so you can hit high with your wand) and inferno. I also pack incendary bonds for burning things... I am a monk secondary so also bring healing breeze for hp recovery and resurrect. You can get some of these spells in Grendich Courthouse.
The fire swords you have seen are found as loot later on in the game from some monsters (i think its a v rare drop).

For pve - firestorm, meteor, meteor shower (I know 2 out 3 of these cause exhaustion) are all good. I wasn't very impressed with phoenix when I tried it.
For pvp though those ones (except meteor) are pretty well useless since people will just clear out at the first sign of a firestorm or meteor shower.

Meteor is an absolutely fantastic skill! Once you get it... don't let go of it. It's wonderful.
Actually, to be honest, I prefer Chain Lightning over meteor... but I'm no air ele :P

Phoenix and Meteor Shower. Phoenix because it's two aoes in one, and Meteor Shower because the perpetual knockdown and high damage helps alot in the later game where mobs get tough.

Why are you all talking about fire spells only, other elements have major advantages as well, especially when the negative effects you can cause with some of the other elements become real useful. Such as slowing mobs down with water spells or knocking them down with earth skills.
There are plenty of choices but I suggest seeking out what you think you'd be best at by looking through elementalists skills on the main page.

Could you give an example of what air spells you used?
I tried air and I didn't like it at all, and swithed back to fire for a while until I finally made the switch to earth. All of this is at the Crystal Desert btw.

Fire does the most damage, you want to kill things fast, stick with fire.

Throughout my gameplay, I've switched between air and fire quite a lot, and I must say I am more pleased with air for pvp AND pve...
Air has armor piercing and so it tends to do a lot more damage... most of the skills aren't projectile based so you can take cover from enemy projectiles by hiding behind an obstacle, and still be able to use your spells on them. There's nothing like Lightning Striking a nearly dead foe that "thinks" he's safe because he's hiding behind a large rock :P
Whirlwind is a nice spell too because it knocks down foes that are attacking. If some warriors decide to bother you, drop a whirlwind and then retreat while they are recoverring from the knockdown.

all good points and I agree. I also like air because it seems like most of my spells now (for the most part) are cheaper, take less time to cast and recharge faster. And, like dinadan was saying, most of the spells aren't projectiles so therefore they hit the target as soon as you cast them (no chance for dodge) and you dont have to worry about that annoying "view of target is obstructed" message. with that said, I can cast chain lighting and easily do 300+ total damage on 3 tagets whereas it would take a full 10 seconds to MAYBE get 300 damage on 3 targets with fire storm (if i got lucky and everyone stood still). Also, air spells have nice little bonus effects to them like interupting an attack, weakening or even blinding foes. sure, a lot of fire spells will set a target on fire, but I think having a combination of different effects on a target at a time makes for a better offense (having someone interupted, weakened AND blinded compared to being on fire for 3 seconds). so yeah like I said before I can go on and on about how air is better but untl you try it out (with some decents spells of course ) you can't really know HOW much better air is

I think all spells has its uses.
The ones im using for PvE atm are fire font and inferno. I just cast protection spells and stuff taht regens my hp then gather and use fire font and inferno and they all die. I dont know why people dont use inferno as much its a fast cast and deals lots of damage to nearby foes.
